Trailer Wiring and Lighting Repair in Laval
Lights that flash together, dim bulbs, a dead turn signal or a fault that comes back every time it rains: on a trailer, electrical problems are the most common and the hardest to track down. At our shop at 1870-A rue Cunard in Laval, we diagnose and rebuild trailer wiring: the trailer-side 4- or 7-pin connector, the harness, the ground and LED lights. Book at 450-232-7828.
Common symptoms and their causes
A few symptoms and their most likely cause:
- All the lights come on or flash at the same time: almost always a bad ground, with the current finding another path through the bulbs.
- Dim or flickering lights: corroded ground, oxidized connector or pinched wire.
- One side does not work: broken wire, failed splice or burnt socket.
- Intermittent fault: wire rubbing against the frame, connector taking on water or harness crushed by a side panel.
- Electric brakes with no effect: cut brake wire, failed magnet ground or damaged 7-pin connector.
A methodical diagnosis, circuit by circuit
Replacing bulbs at random wastes time and fixes nothing. Our diagnosis always follows the same order:
- Test at the trailer connector with a tester: we confirm that each function (running lights, turn signals, brake lights, electric brakes, 12 V feed) actually reaches the trailer.
- Isolate the cause: if the signal does not reach the connector, the problem is on the vehicle side and we tell you so; if it does, we follow the trailer harness.
- Multimeter checks of continuity, voltage and ground resistance, circuit by circuit.
- A lasting repair instead of electrical tape: sealed connectors, heat-shrink tubing and wires secured away from sharp edges and moving parts.
Trailer-side 4- and 7-pin connectors
The connector is the most exposed part: it drags, takes on water and road salt. We repair or replace the trailer-side connector and its junction box.
- 4-pin flat: ground, running lights, left turn/brake and right turn/brake. The standard on small trailers without electric brakes.
- 7-pin (RV style): adds the electric brake output, a 12 V feed (charging the breakaway battery or an RV battery) and an auxiliary or reverse circuit. The connector for braked trailers and RVs.
- Adapters: we sell 7-to-4-pin adapters and vice versa, but an adapter never replaces a missing brake circuit.
The ground: cause number one
Most trailer lighting failures come from the ground. A trailer uses its frame to carry current back, but paint, rust, galvanizing and bolted joints break that path over the years.
- Dedicated ground wire of adequate gauge, from the connector to the frame and to each light where needed
- Ground point cleaned to bare metal, bolted and protected against corrosion
- Separate, verified ground for the electric brake magnets
- Ground check between the tongue and the rest of the frame on bolted trailers
LED lights and harness rebuilds
LED lights draw little power, resist vibration and are more visible than incandescent bulbs. We convert your trailer or RV lighting:
- Combination tail lights (running, brake, turn) and licence-plate light
- Clearance and identification lights and reflectors according to the trailer's width and type
- Work lights and ramp or box lighting on request
- Full harness replacement when the original wires are burnt or corroded
Lighting requirements vary with the trailer's width and type: we install complete lighting and advise you, but the SAAQ is the authority on the standards that apply to your unit. Before a mechanical inspection, see our pre-SAAQ inspection.
Trailer side only
Our service covers the trailer and the RV. Tow-vehicle wiring is not installed by our shop: the vehicle socket, T-connector harness, towing module and brake controller are installed on the vehicle side. We sell hitches and towing accessories, but installation on your vehicle is not offered. Our test at the connector will still tell you whether the problem comes from the trailer or the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Why do all my trailer lights flash at the same time?
It is almost always a bad ground: without a good return path, the current flows through the other bulbs. We rebuild the ground from the connector to the frame and the lights, then test each circuit.
What is the difference between a 4-pin and a 7-pin connector?
The 4-pin flat connector carries the ground, running lights and both turn/brake signals. The 7-pin adds the electric brake output, a 12 V feed and an auxiliary or reverse circuit: it is required on a trailer with electric brakes and on most RVs.
Can you convert my trailer lights to LED?
Yes. We replace tail, clearance and plate lights with LED units, and rebuild the harness and ground as needed so the conversion is reliable.
Do you install wiring or a brake controller on my truck?
No. Vehicle-side wiring (socket, T-connector harness, brake controller) is not installed by our shop. We test the signal at the trailer connector and tell you if the problem comes from the vehicle.
Do you repair RV wiring?
Yes, for exterior lighting, the 7-pin connector, breakaway battery charging and the RV's electric brake circuit.
